How to buy cryptocurrency through Telegram: three ways and how not to fall for a fake manager

Cryptocurrency can be bought through Telegram in three ways: in the Walt wallet (formerly Wallet), in chats and “exchange services” with no website, and from an exchange service for which Telegram is only a contact channel. How they differ, which scams work on Telegram and how to check that the person writing to you is a real manager.

Updated

Cryptocurrency is bought through Telegram in three ways. The first is the Walt wallet inside the messenger (until the end of September 2026 it was called Wallet): it offers buying by card and a P2P market. The second is chats and “exchange services” that have nothing but a Telegram account. The third is an exchange service with a website, for which Telegram is only a channel for contacting the manager. The difference lies in who holds the coins and whom you pay.

Our interest, up front: we are an exchange service of the third type. We buy and sell USDT (TRC20 and ERC20) and USDC (ERC20) for cash hryvnias and dollars: you can sell coins to us in six cities in Ukraine, but you cannot buy from us in every one of them. For us, Telegram is the channel in which a manager arranges the meeting. We do not deal in bitcoin, ether, TON or Gram. So the other two ways are described below in terms of how they work and what to check, not which one is “better”.

One rule holds for all three. A name and an avatar on Telegram can be copied exactly, so the only thing worth checking is the username — character by character and against a source you trust. And payment details are taken only from the service’s interface: from the order on the platform or from the order page, never from a chat.

Three ways and how they differ

We ourselves are the last row of this table, and that is worth keeping in mind. The comparison here is not by rate but by what happens to your money before you have received the coins.

How to buy cryptocurrency in the Telegram wallet

The wallet called Wallet, which used to open from Telegram’s settings, was renamed Walt on 28 September 2026. It now works through the @walt bot; the old address, @wallet, still leads there as of 16 October. Its place in Telegram’s settings, according to the company, is passing to the new Gram wallet — more about it in the quick answers.

Walt is not part of Telegram: under the user agreement of 29 September 2026, the service is run by the Panamanian company TG Wallet Inc., which states plainly that it is neither a subsidiary nor an affiliate of Telegram.

The wallet is custodial: the keys are held by the operator, and what you have is an entry in its books. Access to the coins equals access to the account, and the terms are set by the operator. Hence the mandatory verification. According to the help centre as of 8 October 2026, the basic level — name, date of birth and phone number — is required for everyone, while buying on the P2P market is only possible from the extended level: an ID document and a face check on camera.

There are two ways to buy inside the wallet. The first is by card: the payment is processed by third-party payment providers. For a Ukrainian card an NBU rule matters here: if a payment for cryptocurrency goes to a foreign company, then under the version in force in October 2026 it is possible only from a foreign-currency account and within a monthly limit. Details are in the breakdown of how to buy USDT in Ukraine.

The second way is the P2P market. Listings there are posted by private individuals, and the wallet is only a platform and not a party to the deal. It reserves the seller’s coins when the listing is posted and releases them to you once the seller confirms receiving the money. You pay on your own — by a transfer to the seller.

The wallet’s help centre as of 8 October 2026 sets strict conditions for this transfer:

  • in one payment and only to the payment details shown in the order;
  • not to payment details the seller has sent in the order chat;
  • from a card or account in your own name, the same name as in verification: third-party payments are prohibited;
  • the recipient’s name must match the seller’s name; otherwise, do not pay.

The platform fee, according to the help centre as of 15 October 2026, is paid by the author of the listing, and the final price for the buyer is set by the seller’s rate — how to work out the final P2P rate is covered separately. Whether the hryvnia is on the market right now, and which payment methods are available, is shown by the app itself: at the 2023 launch the hryvnia was among the currencies; we have not checked today’s list.

And what the wallet is not. It is not your own wallet: to take USDT to an exchange service or move it to your own wallet, you will have to withdraw it, and withdrawals are not free: according to the help centre as of 13 October 2026, a withdrawal on the TRON network costs 3.5 USDT. Nor is it an exchange service: it does not deal in cash.

Exchange services and P2P chats on Telegram: which scams work there

The second way is to buy from someone who sells directly on Telegram: in a listings chat or from an “exchange service” that has nothing but an account. There is no platform between you, and the deal is protected only by the seller’s word. According to a Chainalysis estimate from January 2026, schemes in which a scammer poses as someone else grew by 1,400% in 2025. On Telegram they look like this:

  • A manager’s double. The name, avatar and bio are copied from the real account down to the last detail. Only the username is unique, and Telegram allows only Latin letters, digits and underscores in it. So a fake is built on similarity: an extra letter, one more underscore, the digit 0 instead of O, a capital I instead of a lowercase l. A double may also write first — for example, right after you ask a question in a public chat.
  • Prepayment to a stranger. “First the hryvnias to my card, then I’ll send the USDT.” After the transfer the account disappears or asks for more — a “fee”, “insurance”, “for the AML check”.
  • A “guarantor” provided by the other party. The seller suggests running the money through a “guarantor” or an escrow bot that they know. You cannot check who controls them — often it is the same person. Escrow only works when the coins have been reserved before your payment by a platform on which you have an account of your own.
  • Swapped payment details. In the middle of a deal “the card has changed”, or a new wallet address arrives. A “payment completed” screenshot is not proof either: the help centre of the Telegram wallet says plainly that receipts are easy to fake.
  • Fake support. A “staff member” or “moderator” appears in the deal chat and hurries you. According to the wallet’s help centre, only the buyer and the seller write in the order chat, and the word “Support” in a name proves nothing.

What all five schemes have in common: the money goes before the coins, and to payment details sent in a chat.

How to check that a real manager is writing to you

The check takes a few minutes and needs nothing but Telegram and a website you trust.

  1. Username, character by character. Open the exchange service’s website from a bookmark or type the address yourself, not via a link from a chat. Find the username on the contacts page and compare it with whoever is writing to you, sign by sign. The name and avatar prove nothing.
  2. Information about the person. Since March 2025, when someone who is not in your contacts writes to you for the first time, Telegram shows information about them: the country by phone number, the month of registration, and when the name and photo were changed. A “manager of a well-known exchange service” who registered last month or changed their name yesterday is a reason to stop.
  3. Payment details only in the interface. Pay using the details from the order on the platform or from the order page on the website. Details sent in a message are no reason to pay, no matter who sent them.
  4. Haste is a warning sign. “The rate holds for one more minute, transfer now” in a chat is pressure. How long the rate holds in a real order is visible on the website, not in a chat.

Flag the double account’s message with “Report” in the message menu, and write to the exchange service whose username was faked. Checking the username protects you from a fake manager, but not from a fake exchange service as a whole: how to check the service itself — domain, reviews, rules — is covered in the checklist on how to spot a scam exchange service.

How it works with us: Telegram only for contact

With us, Telegram is not where the deal happens but the channel through which the manager arranges a meeting with you. The terms are fixed by the order on the website, and the cash and coins change hands at the cash desk. Step by step:

  1. Open the rate table or a direction page, for example USDT for hryvnias, and enter the amount. The rate depends on the amount: for a large amount it is better; the exact rate for your amount is calculated by the form. The minimum is stated in the form.
  2. Fill in two fields: your Telegram username and, if you are buying, the wallet address on the right network. Copy the address from the receive screen of your wallet — which wallet is right for USDT; what to do if you make a mistake is covered in the article on sending USDT to the wrong address.
  3. Create the order. The rate is locked to it for the time the form shows next to the rate.
  4. The manager writes to you on Telegram — from the username listed on the contacts page. The manager confirms the details and names the cash desk and the time. Orders are processed during the hours listed on the same page; an order placed at night will be answered when the cash desk opens.
  5. When buying for cash, you do not need to pay anything online: you bring the cash to the cash desk, and the operator sends USDT or USDC to your address. This is not a machine: the transfer is made by a person, and you can check its status on the network yourself. What to bring is in the article on how a cash exchange works.
  6. When you sell, the address for transferring the coins appears on the order page. Send only there — not to an address from a chat. More about selling: how to cash out USDT.

You can also write to the manager first — to the same username from the contacts page, for example to ask whether buying is open in your city. The contacts page itself says plainly: we do not write first and do not ask you to transfer funds to a “temporary” wallet. The manager writes only in reply to your order, so a message “from the exchange service” that you did not ask for is not from us.

What we have: USDT on the TRC20 and ERC20 networks and USDC on the ERC20 network for cash hryvnias and dollars. You can sell them to us in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv and Chernivtsi, but buying is not available in all of these cities: where buying is open right now is shown in the rate table. Hryvnias to a card, euros, zlotys and other currencies go through the manager, who names the terms.

What we do not have: bitcoin, ether and coins on the TON network — for bitcoin, see the separate article how to buy bitcoin in Ukraine. And one caveat for large deals: an exchange service may check the origin of the coins; for a large amount, documents may be requested under the law.

Quick answers

Can you buy cryptocurrency on Telegram without verification?

In the Walt wallet, no: according to the help centre as of 8 October 2026, the basic level is mandatory for everyone, and buying on the P2P market requires an ID document and a face check. A deal “without verification” in a chat means that nobody protects it. At an exchange service, documents may be requested under the law for a large amount.

What is Gram on Telegram?

The word has two meanings. GRAM is the new name of the coin of the TON network, formerly Toncoin. And Gram is also Telegram’s own wallet for this coin, gifts and Stars: according to press reports, it has been rolling out gradually since the end of summer 2026, and not everyone has it yet. It is a separate product, not Walt. We do not buy or sell GRAM.

Can you buy USDT through Telegram for cash?

Yes, if Telegram is used only for contact and the deal takes place at a cash desk. That is how we work: an order on the website, a manager on Telegram agrees on the cash desk and the time, you hand over the cash at the cash desk, and the USDT arrives at your address. Handing cash to a courier or a stranger “from a chat” on the strength of a chat agreement is the same prepayment to a stranger.

What should I do if I paid a scammer on Telegram?

Save the chat, the account’s username (not the display name), the payment details you paid to and the transaction hash if you paid in cryptocurrency. If you paid by card, notify your bank immediately. File a report with Ukraine’s cyber police — they have an online form for complaints. And do not respond to people who later offer to “get your money back” for an upfront payment: according to an FBI warning, such “recoverers” take a fee in advance and then vanish or ask for more.
